Round 1 Match Reports
Under 8 Green V OLOR
The first game of the season and the Under 8 Green team took the court with determination, enthusiasm and smiles! Mia and Georgia in shooting positions excelled with lots of great attempts and goals, both the girls passed the ball around to give each other an opportunity to shoot. Cassie, Abbie and Sophie shared WA and WD positions and all did an amazing job. It was wonderful to see the girls both attack and defend with determination. Sarah and Alexa shared C and wow both the girls ran, jumped and covered the entire court. Antonia and Abigail played very strong in the defence positions and were able to intercept and stick with their partners. Georgia was awarded the coach’s trophy this week for such a wonderful first game of netball ever! What an amazing start to the season and I can’t wait to watch these girls try their hardest each week. Well done Under 8 Green!!
U9 Gold V Impalas 22
It was always going to be a big game for the 9 Gold girls after running some personal best times in the school cross country the day before! When we arrived at the courts the weather was dreary and then we saw our opposition … only one of their players was shorter than any girl in our team!
Today we were going to have to pass well and move the ball quickly around the court to keep the game to our advantage.
Despite the uneven heights; our girls began to shift around the court quite well. We were unlucky in the first quarter that neither Melissa nor Portia’s shots on goal went in! Zoe moved the ball around well as centre (or playmaker) and was ably supported by Alison and Angelina (our Player of the Week). In the second quarter Georgia helped create more space with some clever footwork. Olivia was solid all game being where she needed to be and our defence team (Tiara and Angelina) had great success when they communicated with each other about who would go for the rebound and who would defend.
We may not have won the game but there were some important lessons for us take away from playing such quality opposition. 9 Gold played our best netball when we followed our player and not the ball. In fact, when we did this in both the second and fourth quarters; we forced errors from the opposition as they became frustrated with our strong defence. They then made careless passes or had rushed shots at goal. Our best sequences down the court on Saturday came from utilising space and taking time to throw good, solid passes.
Your passion and enthusiasm is inspirational girls. Get outside each afternoon, practice throwing a netball or shooting some goals. Remember, on game day, if at first you are not successful; try doing what Coach Lena showed you at training!
10B1 V Glenhaven 46 – Loss – 4-11
Ready to hit the courts our fabulous 10B1s are now a team of 9. With two new faces in the team the girls were set for their first game as fully fledged netballers.
A few early nerves saw our defence quickly on their feet. Whilst Glenhaven dominated the attack our defence did an amazing effort keeping the ball alive with fantastic rebounds and defence. Our attack is lightening and we could get the ball down to our end quickly. Unfortunately we need to work on coming forward for the ball as the opposition deflected and intercepted our over the head passes.
I told all the girls this week that if they make a mistake to learn from it, not to let it get them down and fix it. I saw a lot of girls on the day working on their technique either stepping or defence. I was very proud of them all. The rose to the challenge which saw us win the 3rd quarter with the girls working hard and we will build on that.
This week we will be working on coming forward for the ball. Fast strong passes and defence techniques.
Keep your eye on these girls… they will amaze you!
11D1 V Oakhill Drive – Win -13-7
The 2015 Netball season has arrived…. and the early morning starts! After a phenomenal 2014, our girls came with mixed emotions. With the hooter seconds away, the girls were smiling and nervous being graded into a higher grade. The game started with a fantastic intercept from Naomi (the first of many), our strong defender, which gave us the ball that led to the first goal being scored for 2015 by Lorraine. Welcoming Alana to our team, who worked hard in defence. She was putting constant pressure on her opponent. It was 3 – 2 at the end of the first quarter. We all knew it was going to be close. With another great intercept, we started the second quarter well. Faith and Isabella working together in the middle court to help bring the ball down. Even after Faith got injured, she still tried to get the ball and help her team. Isabella’s intensity to attack and defend was evident. Welcoming Emma to our team, who was sticking with her player well and trying hard to help the team. 4-4 at the end of the second quarter.
Nicole found her feet very quickly as centre and was starting to orchestrate the team. She passed a beautiful pass to Marisa who was able to convert it to a goal! Marisa was outstanding working hard in defence and attack. She made herself available and was always waiting for the next pass. Olivia was sticking close to her player and managed to tap the ball, which led to us getting the ball and a goal. 9 – 7 – we could slightly breathe. In the last quarter, the girls were working as a team. Erin was on fire as wing attack and stepped up when the team needed it. She was getting the centre passes and working through the defence to make herself available for her team. An outstanding performance from Lorraine, whose shooting was on target. She positioned herself well and was able to deliver 12 goals for the team and be the Player of the Match. Well done, Lorraine!
Final score 13 – 7! Great win girls.
Under 14’s V Glenwood 25 – Won – 19-13
Wow, what a great first game of the season! The girls worked really well together to win this game. Great defence work by Tara, Gen and Georgia, with equally superb attacking and goal shooting by Talon, Angelina and Jazmine. And who could forget our outstanding centre Sophie who is always there to help out. Great playing against a team that were also strong and had a number of really tall girls.
So looking forward to the rest of the season. If the girls continue to play this strong, then the other teams better watch out! Player of the match Jazmine. Co-Captains this year Gen and Sophie.
